Nonaligned countries are committed to backing Sri Lanka at the UNHRC

The nonaligned countries have pledged to support Sri Lanka, if the resolution against the country is moving in the HRC on March 23, the government said yesterday.

The functions of the Cabinet spokesman and Media Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena told a news conference in Colombo, which according to the current

HRC agenda of meetings in Geneva, Sri Lanka, will be discussed on March 23.

The government had sought and obtained the support of the Non-Aligned Movement, including African countries to thwart any possible attempt by the U.S. and its allies for restrictions against the country, Minister Yapa said.

Efforts are being made to seek the support of many nations, the Minister said, adding that there was also the possibility that the U.S. not proceed with its resolution on Sri Lanka.

He said Britain had, by refusing the applications of 52 asylum seekers from Colombo, acknowledged that there were human rights violations in Sri Lanka.

Nirsia Castro Cuban ambassador had met Guevara Construction and Engineering Services Wimal Weerawansa Minister in Colombo yesterday and delivered a message from Cuban President Raul Castro, promising to support his country in the CHR, Minister Yapa said.
